Academia.
Klara Gmeinbauer is exploring visual and auditive media as an Austrian freelancer, media artist, and postgraduate while undertaking her MA in Film Studies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam, UvA (NED).
From fall 2020 to spring 2023 Klara has been completing her BA in Media and Culture (UvA) where she has been specializing in general media and film studies as well as in non-fiction film. During her Erasmus Exchange at the Universitetet i Oslo (NOR) she mostly has been focusing on environmental (digital) humanities which also has been resonating with her BA thesis Expressions of Eco-Cinema: finding the micro in the macro through place and land in Radji and Aasivissuit. While conducting a textual analysis of two ethno-environmentalist expressions of documentary film and eco-cinema the work has been exploring the media objects’ emphasis on land and place as well as their function to preserve Indigenous ecological knowledge in Scandinavia and Greenland.
Living & motivation.
Having grown up in Mondsee and Salzburg, a highly nature exposed area located in Austria has taught her appreciation for the outdoors and ecological aesthetics ever since. Her environment has provided her with physical and mental challenges as well as with a realm of peace and joy for herself but also to be shared with the outdoor community, friends, family, and others.
Her photographic and filmic work has been driven by subjects of her own hometown as well as wihtin the different places she has lived in namely, Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway, also including further travels. A very striking and initiative moment for Klara’s work has been her gap year journey (2019-2020) where she has been volunteering as a teacher in the Nepalese Himalaya and later on also assisting rowing clubs in Melbourne (Australia) and Hanoi (Vietnam).
